Free trade zones (FTZs) are a specific type of special economic zone (SEZ) where goods can be imported, handled, manufactured, and exported without direct intervention from Customs. They play an important role in modernizing China’s business landscape and serve as areas where authorities can experiment with pro-business regulations. Sure, it is the same- but comparing that to traditional (normal) Chinese companies – that is about half of the average 30 or so percent corporate tax (depending on variables). Currently, China has signed and implemented 20 free trade agreements (FTAs), while 12 FTAs are in negotiation and 8 are under consideration.
Located on the mainland, the government of China grants its special economic zones (SEZs) more free market-oriented economic policies and flexible governmental measures, compared to the planned economy elsewhere. This allows SEZs to utilize economic management which is more attractive to foreign and domestic businesses.
